Lighting

This pendant was produced by Osvětlovací sklo, one of the leading Czechoslovak lighting manufacturers of the 20th century. In the 1970s, their designers created a wide range of pendants that combined clean, modern forms with superb glass craftsmanship. The Linea pendant is a representative piece of this era, balancing function with refined aesthetics.

In the second half of the 20th century, Czechoslovak glass production gained international recognition for both quality and creativity. The company Osvětlovací sklo Valašské Meziříčí became renowned for its decorative and functional lighting, widely exported and admired abroad. This pendant is a representative example of that golden era.

Created during a period when Czechoslovak design embraced modernist forms with a focus on both function and aesthetics, this pendant represents the quality and creativity of Czech glass and lighting production. Such fixtures were often used in hotels, cultural venues, and representative spaces.

In the 1960s, Czechoslovak design was defined by clean lines and a strong focus on quality materials. Lighting fixtures were often made for public spaces, hotels, and representative buildings, and they remain symbols of modernist design today. This pendant originates from a Prague hotel interior, where it served as both functional and decorative lighting.

Kamenický Šenov has been a glassmaking center since the 18th century, and after nationalization in 1948, it became the main producer of lighting fixtures under the brand Lustry n.p., later known worldwide as Preciosa. During the 1970s and 1980s, the company produced hundreds of chandelier models that combined hand-blown or pressed glass with modernist lines. This model is a fine example of late modernist design moving towards subtlety and decorative minimalism.

This pendant is the result of cooperation between two major Czechoslovak lighting producers – Lustry n.p. Kamenický Šenov and Osvětlovací sklo Valašské Meziříčí. During the second half of the 20th century, both companies became synonymous with quality and innovation in decorative lighting, exporting their designs throughout Europe and overseas.

Kamenický Šenov was a major hub of Czechoslovak lighting production, famed for its collaboration with leading designers. Jaroslav Bejvl Sr. served as a principal designer, blending functional aesthetics with masterful craftsmanship. Opal glass globes were a popular choice in the 1970s–80s for their ability to diffuse light softly and evenly while maintaining an elegant appearance.

During the 1970s, design across the globe was heavily influenced by the Space Age aesthetic—a futuristic style inspired by space exploration, science, and optimism about technological progress. Even behind the Iron Curtain, countries like Czechoslovakia followed these global trends. The state-owned company Lustry n. p., then the largest lighting manufacturer in the country, began producing fixtures that reflected this forward-thinking spirit. Combining high-quality materials like brass and glass with bold, modern forms, these chandeliers embodied the spirit of the era.
