P39 Floor Lamp – Akram Legrand, France, 1990
Product description
Product description
Exceptional P39 floor lamp, designed by French designer Akram Legrand around 1990.
A slender metal structure rising from a circular base supports three individual light elements arranged vertically. Each shade is composed of shaped white Altuglas elements overlapping around the light source to create an expressive organic form reminiscent of a flower.
The interaction between material and light is the defining feature of the design. When switched off, the white sculptural elements resemble an abstract object; once illuminated, the translucent material gently diffuses the light and emphasizes the individual layers of each shade. The result is both atmospheric illumination and a striking luminous sculpture.
Legrand continued to explore the combination of Plexiglas and stainless steel as well as modular, organically shaped lighting elements in his later work, notably in his T33 lamp.

Historical background
The P39 is a distinctive example of French lighting design around the transition from the 1980s to the 1990s, combining technical materials with expressive sculptural forms.
Rather than treating light simply as a functional element, Legrand incorporates illumination into the architecture of the object itself. His work is characterized by the use of Plexiglas, metal and repeated modular elements – an approach also visible in his later T33 lamp, constructed from convex Plexiglas lighting modules and stainless-steel components. Style and use
The P39 sits somewhere between a functional floor lamp and a luminous sculpture. Its slender construction occupies relatively little physical space while the three sculptural shades create a strong visual presence.
Ideal as a statement piece in a contemporary, eclectic or design-focused interior, either alongside lounge furniture or standing independently as a sculptural lighting object. It becomes particularly impressive after dark, when the layered white shades are transformed by the warm light within.
