Venetian “Grotto” Piano Stool with Shell-Shaped Seat – Italy, circa 1880
Product description
Product description
Exceptional Venetian Grotto piano stool, dating from the second half of the 19th century, circa 1880.
The most striking feature is the naturalistically carved shell-shaped seat, with deep radiating ribs, a gently undulating edge and elegant scrolls to the front. The seat revolves on an internal screw mechanism allowing its height to be adjusted – a characteristic feature of period piano stools.
The shell is supported by an elaborately carved tripod structure. Gracefully curved legs are decorated with foliate motifs and terminate in expressive animal paw feet, joined by a shaped three-part base. Further delicate floral carving decorates the apron beneath the seat.
Beautifully executed throughout, the stool is a characteristic example of the imaginative and extravagant furniture produced in Venice during the second half of the 19th century.

Historical background
So-called Grotto furniture was one of the most distinctive expressions of Venetian furniture making during the second half of the 19th century. Inspired by grottoes and the marine world, these pieces incorporated shells, dolphins, seahorses and other naturalistic motifs, often combining them with Renaissance and Rococo Revival elements. Such exotic furniture also appealed strongly to wealthy international visitors travelling through Venice.
Among the important Venetian manufacturers associated with this style were Fratelli Testolini, whose furniture business was established in 1847 and became particularly known for Grotto-style furnishings. Palazzo Coronini preserves a closely related carved walnut music stool attributed to the Testolini Brothers and dated Venice, circa 1880.
Style and use
Originally designed as a functional piano stool, today this piece works equally well as a highly decorative collector's object. Its dramatically carved shell seat gives it an almost sculptural presence.
Perfect beside a piano or grand piano, but equally effective as a stand-alone statement piece in a contemporary, eclectic or historic interior.
