Product description

Remarkable set of four Art Deco armchairs dating from the 1930s, preserved as a complete matching ensemble. Their distinctive wooden construction combines the geometric discipline of interwar Modernism with highly decorative elements characteristic of the Art Deco period.

The chairs are defined by their large arched armrests, complemented by smaller circular elements incorporated into the sides. Together they create a striking composition of circles and sweeping curves, giving the frames an almost architectural and sculptural presence.

The most distinctive feature is the solid wooden backrest decorated with a deeply carved fan-shaped motif. Radiating ribs rise through the centre of the back, creating one of the most recognizable decorative patterns associated with the Art Deco era. A softly scalloped lower edge provides an elegant contrast to the otherwise geometric construction.

The seats retain their traditional natural cane weaving, whose lighter colour contrasts beautifully with the warm tone of the wooden frames. The open construction and woven seats also give these substantial chairs an unexpected visual lightness.

A particularly attractive feature is the survival of a complete set of four matching armchairs, allowing them to form an impressive conversation group around a coffee table or to furnish a salon, conservatory or sophisticated residential interior.

Historical background

During the 1920s and 1930s, European Art Deco gradually evolved from highly decorative forms towards a cleaner geometric vocabulary. Circles, sweeping curves, stepped forms and radiating patterns became important elements of furniture and interior design.

The fan or sunburst motif became particularly associated with the visual language of the period. At the same time, designers frequently combined carefully crafted wooden structures with natural woven materials such as cane. Surviving European armchairs from the 1930s document both the use of cane and strongly curved geometric wooden elements in Art Deco seating.

The designer and manufacturer of this particular set have not yet been reliably identified, and we therefore deliberately refrain from making an unsupported attribution.

Style and use

As a complete set of four, these armchairs offer an excellent opportunity to create a striking salon or conversation group around a low Art Deco or Modernist table.

Their sculptural quality also allows them to work individually, while the strong geometry, natural cane and warm wood make them particularly effective in contemporary interiors where their distinctive silhouette can be fully appreciated.

Interesting facts

The fan motif was one of the signature decorative devices of the Art Deco period, appearing across architecture, furniture, metalwork, glass and interior decoration.

Here it is interpreted in an unusually sculptural manner, carved directly into the wooden backrest and complemented by the repeating circular geometry of the armrests.
